About Pain Medication
There are several conditions, injuries, and disorders that can cause chronic pain in the body. From migraines to back pain, chronic pain can decrease an individual’s quality of life and make them dependent on others to take care of them. At Lewis Pain & Physical Medicine, Dr. Jerry Lewis provides temporary pain medication management to help his patients manage their chronic pain. Medication management is used as part of an overall treatment plan, which our pain management specialists will create in order to try and find safer alternatives to combat the pain. Dr. Lewis believes in finding the root of chronic pain in order to manage it, but he does provide pain medication to help his patients gain relief during the healing process, or to help them manage their pain through rehabilitation. To learn more about pain medication management, contact our locations in Frisco, TX and Irving, TX to schedule a consultation today.
Ideal Candidates for Pain Medication
Since pain medications can be highly addictive, they are typically not used as the first form of treatment for chronic pain. Instead, Dr. Lewis may first suggest physical therapy, exercise, or diet change before suggesting pain medications. They may also be prescribed in the waiting time before a more long-lasting solution, such as injections. In some cases, a patient may be provided with pain medications to help them complete physical therapy. Dr. Lewis will hold a consultation to discuss your medical history and other treatment options before determining if pain medications should be prescribed.
What to Expect with Pain Medication
There are several different medications that can be used to manage chronic pain depending on the type and origin of the pain. For instance, muscular pain may require a different medication than joint or arthritic pain. If used longer than suggested, some patients may build up an immunity to the medication, which is why Dr. Lewis uses medication as a temporary form of pain management. Certain types of pain medications are only suggested to be used for up to four weeks. Dr. Lewis will evaluate your symptoms in order to prescribe the appropriate medication for your needs. He may also create a treatment plan with other forms of treatment that can coincide with the medication. If patients notice any abnormal side effects while taking pain medication, they should contact our office immediately.

Medication Treatment Options
Our medical staff is available to assist you if you have additional questions about our pain management program. We accept both scheduled appointments and walk-ins.
Our medication management involves special treatments including:
- Facet & medical branch block
- Spinal cord stimulation
- Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)
- Injections, steroids for pain in joints, muscles, or tendons
- Epidural Steroid Injection - epidural steroid injections are a very common treatment option for chronic pain that has continued to elevate over time and is not improving with other forms of treatment. Dr. Lewis will make sure to discuss all your options and benefits as well as how it provided effective pain relief for patients whose pain is preventing them from completing proper physical therapy.
Common Conditions for Medication Management
We found many of our patients turning to medicine after growing tired of putting a Band-Aid on their pain issues. Luckily, we’re turning back the clock and restoring the health of injured tissue, with the ultimate goal of reducing and eliminating the need for medications and long-term treatment plans. Not to mention the potential side effects and long-term destruction of the tissue around the injuries from those treatments.
All of our treatment plans are strategically designed to mask pain, not just treat it.
Some conditions our medication management techniques can treat include:
- Chronic headaches, mouth, or face pain
- Low back pain
- Muscle and/or bone pain
- Neck pain
When dealing with severe pain, medication may be administered in a smaller dose and monitored for complete safety. Even though some medications used to treat pain appear easy to take, complex administration and guidance for management should only be taken by highly experienced and knowledgeable specialists.
Call our office to schedule a consultation with our exceptional staff in order to discuss the most effective, least invasive solution possible.

I had my first steroid injection in my back since last March. So far so good. The best part of this experience today, by far, was the nurse anesthetist. Her bedside manner and attention to detail were top notch.
