About Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is a procedure that can eliminate pain caused by a spinal compression fracture. It can also create stability for the bone and rebuild some or all of the spinal height that may have been lost because of the fracture. Kyphosis is a curvature in the spine that can be caused by a compression fracture. One of the main benefits of kyphoplasty is the correction of kyphosis to restore proper posture. For this procedure, a small incision is made in the patient’ back through which a narrow tube is placed. A special type of balloon will then be placed through the tube into the vertebra. The balloon is then gently inflated to shift the fracture to its normal position. This creates a cavity within the vertebrae which is then filled with a cement-like material, known as polymethylmethacrylate, to secure the bone. A good candidate for kyphoplasty would be an individual who has experienced a recent spinal compression fracture. A kyphoplasty procedure cannot correct long-standing spinal deformities, so it is important to seek medical attention once you notice the effects of a spinal fracture or curvature in the spine. Most commonly spinal compression fractures are a symptom of osteoporosis, but there are other conditions that can cause them. During your consultation, Dr. Lewis will look at your medical history, symptoms, and spinal x-rays to decide if you are a candidate for kyphoplasty.


Kyphoplasty can be completed as an outpatient or in patient procedure in the office that can be performed under general or local anesthesia. Dr. Lewis will start by making a small incision in the back and using x-ray images, he will insert the tube and then the balloon. After the balloon is in position, it will be inflated and then removed. Dr. Lewis will then insert the polymethylmethacrylate into the cavity. The entire process can take up to an hour for each vertebra that is being treated.


Patients can begin to notice pain relief within one or two days following their treatment. Post-treatment instructions will be delivered by Dr. Lewis and patients will need to attend a follow-up appointment so that he can adjust their treatment plan if needed. If the patient has been diagnosed with osteoporosis, there is a risk of receiving future spinal fractures after the kyphoplasty. In that case, other courses of treatment may be discussed with Dr. Lewis.
